Tipperary County Council intend to appoint technical consultants to conserve the Westgate building and review all options available for its reuse. The brief is to explore options for the future use of the building and to apply for funding for its restoration through any available funding channels. We are looking for a design team with experience in conservation works on protected structures. The proposed works relate to the conservation of the building fabric and the identification of its end use. Tipperary County Council have been monitoring the condition of the buildings and actively engaging in maintenance over the past two decades. The most recent significant works were completed in 2002-07 which focussed on the roof and (primary) dressed sandstone east and west facades. Tipperary County Council wishes to appoint a design team which includes a RIAI Grade 1 or 2 Conservation Architect/Conservation Engineer to guide the project through the development phases. Tipperary County Council intends to explore all viable redevelopment opportunities for the Westgate area in order to enhance its functionality, attractiveness, and contribution to the public realm. As part of this study, the Council is considering the potential acquisition of one of the adjoining properties—6 O’Connell Street or Grubbs Court—to enable the creation of a more cohesive and impactful design solution. The purpose of this commission is to assess the existing built context, identify redevelopment potential, and prepare a range of integrated layout options for the future use of Westgate and its adjoining properties.
