Indonesia"s tropical forests are critical for global climate stability, yet they face widespread threats from unsustainable land-use practices, illegal logging, and forest fires, which cause significant deforestation and high Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions. While the Government of Indonesia aims for a 29% carbon emission cut by 2030 and has fostered new policies through decentralization, the key challenge remains implementation at the regional and provincial level. Differences in technical capacity, resource allocation, and inter-sectoral coordination may affect the consistency of monitoring, law enforcement, and sustainable forest management (SFM) planning required to support national commitments. The FORCLIME project aims to achieve two objectives (1) Climate Mitigation: To significantly reduce GHG emissions from the forestry sector and (2) Livelihood Strengthening: To strengthen local livelihoods without undermining conservation efforts. The FORCLIME project collaborates with the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry on national forest policy and sector strategies, as well as on the subnational implementation of activities to support local forest management. At subnational level the project operates in eastern Indonesia in the provinces of Central Sulawesi, Papua, and South West Papua and South Papua. The project directly addresses implementation gaps by building technical capacity and improving cross-sectoral coordination within provincial and national authorities, ensuring the effective execution of forest conservation and SFM policy on the ground. Effective local stakeholder participation is a critical success factor in all planning and strategy development processes.
